Indian Agriculture : A Forbidden Reality of our Culture

From never satiating popcorns,to irresistible salty chips, from cookies to sweeteners.Do we think how it reaches us? But to understand this on a large scale we need to unveil masks over our thoughts, aping western style; and think about the critical aspects.Either we don’t wish to understand or we don’t get the exposure. The onus is not only on the government;but we the people of India( socio-economic) should share responsibilities to awaken the generation.
A tough task but not impossible!

For centuries, we have been known as a nation dependent on agriculture, and is the hallmark of Indian Soil. Agriculture is still one of the unorganized sectors.Be it administration, bureaucrats, national policies; everywhere there is laxity and unwillingness.Irony is that in spite of abundance of staples (rice, maize, dals). Our farmers produce potatoes, sugarcane, oilseeds and non-essential items like tea, cotton etc.Yet, we are a food-deprived nation.Though we often talk about IT proliferation- a flip side of the coin.

Indian economy is nothing without agriculture.Agriculture is the spine of the Indian economy. It provides food and raw materials but also  generates equal opportunities for the rural population.Think of how life would be if farmers don’t sow seeds, plough fields. No manufacturing and processing units would have survived if there were no raw crops.

In terms of area, we are ranked seventh in the global map and the major section belongs to land. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Kutch to Kohima, one can see an extensive variety of crops.Unity in diversity not only reflects in religion, race, community or languages but crops too. This makes agriculture substantial.

Challenges of Agriculture
Pity to see Indian farmers don’t have a safeguard against natural calamities be it drought, flood or scanty rain.Irrigation and dependence of rain in flood-hit areas are major evils.
Many farmers don’t have sufficient land or available resources ( modern age equipment), a demoralizing factor.Affluent farmers  exploit small farmers and remain on their mercy and goodwill -- as they are dependent on loans and mortgages. And this is one of the reasons many poor farmers are suppressed under back-breaking debts For them, agriculture is the only possibility, but when it fails the “demon of debt” start haunting them. And for some years now, this has been the dark side of agriculture.

Even today, when there is a nationwide threat of COVID-19.People ran away to their hometowns created chaos as their daily wages suffered badly. In spite of many welfare schemes brought in by GOI, and respective state governments be it two- square meals, or healthcare essentials or even monetary relief. Still, they eloped to their hometown. They know they could arrange a ----loaf of bread in their hometown if they could stay alive. There are mixed reactions but one thing we need to assess is the downsizing and plight of agriculture; the root cause why landless labourers migrate to cities in search of employment for survival.

If there can be a railway budget why can’t we have an agriculture budget to revive agriculture.
